The houses sit in two parts of Reims, Épernay is a separate town, and the city has two tourist offices that look alike on a map. Before you set out, or before you buy Reims Champagne tickets, get the layout straight here.
Saint-Nicaise hill is the Reims part of the UNESCO listing. Its chalk pits hold 25 km of galleries, as champagne.fr counts them, and four houses open their cellars here.
Taittinger keeps its cellars on the site of the former Saint-Nicaise Abbey, 18 metres down. Ruinart is at 4 rue des Crayères, with its chalk pits about 40 metres deep. Veuve Clicquot receives you at its Visit Center Saint-Pétersbourg, 1 rue Albert Thomas. Domaine Pommery's cellars and chalk pits are on the UNESCO list too.
Veuve Clicquot puts its visit centre 30 minutes' walk from the city centre. So if you plan two houses on the hill in one day, you walk between them, not back to town.
Two houses stand apart from the hill. Mumm is at 34 rue du Champ de Mars, and Lanson at 66 rue de Courlancy. Each is a separate walk, so book one slot at a time and leave time between them.
Reims has two, and they are easy to mix up. The main office is at 6 rue Rockefeller, on the cathedral parvis. It opens every day, 10:00 to 18:00 until 23 November, and closes at 17:00 on Sundays from October.
The second is an information point on the Cour de la Gare, the Reims Centre station square. This is where most shared tours meet. From September to February it opens Monday to Saturday, 8:30 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:00, and it is closed on Sundays and public holidays.
Épernay is 27 km from Reims, as its tourist office puts it. The regional train from Reims Centre takes 30 minutes, with four halts on the way: Rilly-la-Montagne, Germaine, Avenay-Val-d'Or and Aÿ-Champagne.
The Avenue de Champagne begins five minutes' walk from Épernay station and runs for 1.5 km. Moët & Chandon stands at number 18 and Mercier at 68. Nicolas Feuillatte runs shuttles from the station, and 110 km of cellars lie under the avenue.
Hautvillers is 6 km from Épernay and 26 km from Reims. Its vineyards are UNESCO-listed, and its old abbey, where Dom Pérignon worked, is private. The Saint-Sindulphe church beside it holds his tombstone and is open all year. The village has no station, so you need a car, a bike or a tour.
By road from Reims, the Hautvillers tourist office sends you off the A4 at exit 23, towards Épernay. Its nearest stations are Épernay at 6 km, Champagne-Ardenne TGV at 25 km and Reims Centre at 29 km. So a train alone will not get you there, and the last stretch is by road.

Flying in? The Hautvillers tourist office puts Paris-Charles de Gaulle 130 km away, Orly 145 km and Paris-Vatry 50 km. Épernay's tourist office puts Charles de Gaulle 35 minutes by train from Champagne-Ardenne TGV station. From there, the tram takes you into Reims Centre, where the tours meet.
