Reims Champagne Weather, Month by Month

A champagne day is half underground and half in the vines. The cellars stay cold all year, but the season decides which houses open and what you see outside. Before you book your Reims Champagne guided tours, pick your month here.

What the weather does to a champagne day here

Most of the day is spent in chalk cellars, and they are cold in every month. Mercier warns its visitors so. You go down in a warm layer in July and come up into the heat.

The rest is outdoors. The grower tours stop in the vines and in village streets, and the half days run in all weather, so dress for it and wear shoes you can walk on grass in. In rain or storm, the e-bike afternoon runs the same route by people carrier. The jeep runs in rain, under its cover.

The season also sets the calendar. Veuve Clicquot shuts in winter, Mumm opens fewer days, and the cathedral towers close from mid-November to mid-February. The figures below are Météo-France's 1991–2020 averages for Chambrecy, the Comité Champagne's vineyard station at 150 m, southwest of Reims.

Picked your month?

Check which houses open on your dates, then choose a day with growers, a big house, or both.

Best time of day

The cathedral opens at 8:00, two hours before the first tower climb. House tours run at set slots through the day. Veuve Clicquot receives visitors from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm.

Some houses close at lunchtime. In winter, Mumm's visits pause from 12:30 to 13:30, and Nicolas Feuillatte's pause from 12:30 to 14:00 all year. Plan your slots around the break.

For the vines, the grower half days leave at 9:20 am or 2:00 pm. On a hot July day, the morning is the cooler choice. And on a Regalia night, stay for 22:45, when the cathedral front lights up.
