Afternoon with two family growers, from Reims station
The two estates were very different, and between them the whole way champagne is made finally made sense.
John L. · Traveller · August 2026
What travellers wrote after an afternoon with family growers, a day from Paris or a private car, retold in short beside each operator's own published rating. Comparing Reims Champagne guided tours? The ratings and prices sit side by side below.
These are travellers' own accounts, paraphrased. The low scores stay in, because they tell you something useful. On a grower afternoon, about half the time is spent on the road between villages. At a big house such as Mumm, the house may pour one glass where a grower pours three.

Good tastings and a knowledgeable guide, and the best of it was seeing the vineyards themselves rather than a big house in town with no vines to show.

The small producers were the highlight, and not something we could have reached on our own. One warning: about half the afternoon is spent in the car between stops.

Afternoon with two family growers, from Reims station
Not a tour of Reims or Épernay at all: a long drive to a small house, narrow stairs and back gardens, and growers not to my taste. Pick a house in Reims if that is what you want.

Mumm, two family producers and lunch, from Reims
At Mumm the house's own guides take over for an hour and a half, and pour one glass where the growers poured three. A good overview of producers of every size.

Veuve Clicquot day from Paris by train
The train was easy to manage, and we loved Veuve Clicquot and the family-run winery, with a guide who kept the day interesting. The van was the problem: eight of us inside, and my husband, who is tall, only fitted up front beside the driver. For this fare we had expected a roomier vehicle.
Debbie L. · Couple · Traveller · May 2026
The family growers are in villages outside Reims, so a grower afternoon spends a good part of its time in the van. Travellers who knew that loved the small producers; one who expected a tour of Reims itself did not.
At the big houses the house's guide takes over and your own guide waits outside. Travellers found the houses good on history and scale, and the growers better for the people who make the wine.
Travellers in January and February found houses shut, and one advises against Mondays. On a quiet winter day, though, a small group can feel like a private tour.
On one Paris day, lunch turned out to be a group meal at EUR 50 each. Where lunch is in the fare, travellers single it out, down to a four-course meal paired with champagne.
These figures are the operators' own, published on their booking pages and shown as they stand. They belong to the operators, not to us. The second column says where the day starts, and the third who pours.

A tour with hundreds of reviews and one with a handful are not a verdict on each other. The gap is mostly how long each has been on sale, and how many seats it sells. A private day with a 5.0 from a few groups is worth reading closely rather than skipping.
