With a Badge of Excellence, and eight people at most in the van.

Maison Mumm in the morning

You start in Reims, in the cellars of G.H. Mumm on the rue du Champ de Mars. The house was founded in 1827, and its cellars run for almost 25 km under the city. For an hour and a half a Mumm guide takes over: the house leads its own tours, then pours your first glass of the day. That is the part of champagne most visitors picture, and it takes up the morning.

Mumm sells this kind of visit direct too, from EUR 30 for its Cordon Rouge tour. What you cannot buy from the house is the rest of the day. Choosing a champagne tasting tour reims? The fares for both kinds of maker sit side by side.

Lunch at the grower's table

After Mumm, the van heads out to the villages. You visit two family producers, each with a cellar visit and a tasting, and you have lunch at one of the two tables. It is a traditional meal at a family winery, with champagne poured alongside. Tell the operator about any dietary needs when you book: a request made at the last minute is charged EUR 20.

Between them you spend an hour at Hautvillers, where Dom Pérignon was the abbey's cellar master from 1668 to 1715. His tombstone lies in the choir of the Saint-Sindulphe church, which is open all year.

Seven glasses across the day

You taste seven glasses in all, at the house and at the growers. The contrast is the lesson. A maker that buys grapes, musts or wines as well as growing its own carries NM on the label, for négociant-manipulant. A grower that makes champagne only from its own grapes carries RM, for récoltant-manipulant. Look for the two letters on the labels as you taste, and by the last stop you can taste the difference for yourself.

How the day runs

  1. Morning, the Reims station square. Meet your guide outside the station tourist office; the time is on your booking.
  2. Maison Mumm, 1.5 hours. The cellars with a house guide, and a first glass.
  3. A family winery, 1.5 hours. A cellar visit and tasting.
  4. Hautvillers, 1 hour. The abbey church, the village and the vines.
  5. A second family winery, 2 hours. A cellar visit, a lesson in tasting, and lunch at one of the two tables.
  6. Late afternoon, back in Reims. The van drops you at the station square, about eight hours after the start.

Who this suits: a first day with both kinds of maker

Book this if

You want one full day that shows you a famous house and the family growers, with lunch looked after. It suits couples and friends on a first visit, and travellers coming from Paris by an early train.

Book something else if

You only have an afternoon: the growers' afternoon from the station square takes four and a half hours. If you want the van to yourselves, the private growers day with lunch comes from the same operator, and every private champagne tour from Reims is compared in one place. From Paris without a train, the day trip from Paris starts at 7:00 am.
